Amazon Fixes AWS Glitch That Sent Customers Billion-Dollar Cloud Bills

Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers woke up to massive shock on Friday morning when a major billing console glitch displayed astronomical cost estimates ranging from hundreds of millions to upwards of $2.5 trillion. In one extreme case, a user with just $0.19 in actual monthly usage received a terrifying $2.5 billion projected bill.

Amazon quickly moved to reassure anxious cloud developers and enterprise users, confirming the heart-stopping numbers were entirely an error. The company traced the issue back to a unit pricing bug within its estimated billing computation subsystem.

Fortunately, AWS confirmed that the glitch only impacted the display layer of cost estimates; actual usage data and final invoices were completely unaffected. Amazon has paused billing console updates and is actively recomputing the data to restore accurate balances, requiring no manual actions from users.
