Google Analytics has introduced a new dedicated feature to track and analyze web traffic originating from popular AI assistants. Website owners and marketers can now easily see how users discover their content through generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude directly within their Default Channel Group reports.
This update introduces three key changes to traffic source dimensions:
Medium: A new ai-assistant value is automatically assigned when referrer data matches a recognized AI chatbot.
Channel Group: Visits are now categorized under a distinct "AI Assistant" channel.
Campaign: AI-driven traffic will be tagged with the (ai-assistant) campaign name.
As generative AI continues to transform web discovery, this update allows businesses to measure referral clicks, identify trending AI traffic sources, and compare AI-driven visitors against traditional channels like organic search and paid ads.
